Butoh explores existential themes such as death, decay, transformation and the darker aspects of human nature. The dance does not follow a strict technique, but is often spontaneous, requiring the dancer to discover his own movements through his emotion and inner state. It often incorporates elements of the tragic or absurd, inviting the audience into a deeper, inner dimension.
